Take a few moments at the Biennial to brighten the day of US military personnel deployed overseas by creating care packages at the Commission for Social Action’s Adopt-a-Soldier booth.
By stopping by the booth you will have the opportunity to pack boxes of treats for ‘our soldiers’, write them letters or draw pictures, fill out the customs forms that allow the boxes to be delivered, and even chat online with members of our adopted platoons. Your notes of thanks and well wishes can make a world of difference to troops stationed far away from home under trying conditions. Be sure to pack some items in your suitcase to add to the care packages, and/or donate $18 at Biennial to cover the cost of shipping a package.
Want to do even more? Materials will be available at Biennial to allow you to take this project back to your congregation to continue the relationship and make a longer lasting ‘adoption’.
Urgently needed items which will pack easily into your suitcase include:
- International phone cards (very easy to pack!).
- Boot and glove warmers (available at sporting good stores)
- 100% Cotton t-shirts
- Socks (khaki green or brown)
- Woman’s toiletries (shower gel, fruit scented shampoos)
- African- American hair care products
- Microwavable popcorn
