We are thrilled that Toronto, Canada's "Creative City", will be our home for the 2009 Biennial Convention.
From the airport, it's just a twenty-minute taxi ride to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, located in downtown Toronto. Known for its culture, energy, and entertainment options, Toronto is a truly vibrant city and the convention center is at the heart of all the action. The beautiful building is just a short stroll from an exciting array of restaurants, specialty shops, art galleries and sports venues. |
In line with with the Union's dedication to producing environmentally sound conventions, the Convention Centre is known for its dedication to environmental responsibility. The MTCC's leadership in protecting the environment has been repeatedly recognized by the industry and business community through numerous awards including the 2007 International Association of Congress Centres Innovation Award, the Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada (BOMA) GO Green designation and the Gold Award in the Ontario Waste Minimization Awards by the Recycling Council of Canada.
The Metro Toronto Convention Centre recently hired a full time Sustainability Coordinator to ensure that they are meeting their clients' desire to be envirionmentally responsible in their conventions.
The MTCC already has a track record of exemplary leadership in environmental responsibility:
- The Centre currently diverts 77% of all waste generated, and donates more than 2,000 lbs of food leftovers annually to local food banks.
- Clients and event planners can opt for clean, renewable energy, made possible through a special partnership with Bullfrog Power, which also powers all MTCC administrative offices and electronic signage.
- Following their lead, all onsite MTCC official suppliers - including AVW Telav, GES, Livingston Event Logistics, ShowTech Power & Lighting, and Target Security - will be "Bullfrog powering" their internal offices as well.
- By retrofitting older lighting, using motion detectors in meeting rooms, and replacing and modernizing old natural gas boilers, the MTCC has reduced energy consumption by 20% over eight years.
- The MTCC South Building is naturally cooled with extremely cold deep water extracted from Lake Ontario and is equipped with a seven-acre green roof, significantly reducing electricity consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and use of ozone-depleting refrigerants.

The Metro Toronto Convention Centre is a very large place and there will be distances to walk between events.
In order to make this easier for participants who have difficulty walking, the Union is in the process of finding companies who provide mobility scooter rentals. Please check back soon for information on the companies that the Union has identified. Individuals will need to make their own arrangements.
If you make arrangements to rent a scooter it will be delivered to the Convention Centre or your hotel for easy pick up.
Please note that we do not endorse a particular company, but we hope that this option will make your participation in Biennial comfortable and convenient.
